Discovery Group

We are committed to ensuring that the true object of the Boys’ Brigade is upheld within the Company and found that a traditional Bible Class for Company / Seniors held on a Sunday morning was not working for us. Eight years ago it was decided to change the meeting time of the Bible Class to a Sunday evening, our numbers increased slightly and we built upon this. The programme consisted of a short time of worship followed with Christian Board Games which proved to be very popular. The seed had been sown. Since then the name was changed in 2001 to The Discovery Group, to give it a more meaningful and upbeat name. The numbers increased and attendances averaged 15 boys on a Sunday evening. On the 20th November 2005 The “New” Discovery Group was launched to include members of the Junior Section who again failed to be attracted to a traditional Sunday morning Sunday School or Bible class. Staff worked during the closed season in Summer 2005 to come up with a worthwhile and meaningful programme, centred on bringing boys closer to Christ through the work of The Boys’ Brigade. Our Launch night took the theme of “ Who Am I” and attracted 31 boys from our Company & Junior Section who took part in Worship and enjoyed an array of activities based on the theme. Food and drink in the form of Hot Dogs and Juice were provided and proved to be the start of something big. The night was hailed a success by all attending. The Discovery Group continued to meet until Sunday 2nd April 2006 and we were pleased to report that attendances averaged 30 boys and 8 staff throughout the session. In addition to the Christian Boards Games, the Junior section were involved in a number of Craft Sessions and physical activity sessions. In 2009 / 2010 the group continue to meet on a Sunday evening and have reviewed the current format to include a Junior and Senior games club meeting after the group worship. We look forward to see how the group develops in the future.

The Object of The Boys’ Brigade is the advancement of Christ’s Kingdom among Boys, and the promotion of habits of Obedience, Reverence, Discipline, Self-Respect and all that tends towards a true Christian Manliness.
